It’s great to see a major news outlet like Fox giving MMA some time and space, even if it is only online.

What do you guys think about this trend of high caliber wrestlers abandoning their offensive wrestling games?

Sean Sherk was at a huge disadvantage standing with Edgar because of his reach. Sherk has good technical striking but we’ve seen him come up short while throwing power strikes against both Penn and Edgar. In both fights Sherk abandoned his wrestling and lost boxing matches.

Rashad Evans seemingly did the same thing against Machida. I know Machida is not easy to take down, and Edgar is a world class wrestler in his own right, but Evans needed to incorporate his offensive wrestling with his striking to have a chance against Lyoto.

Frankie Edgar had the perfect strategy. He was ready to use his wrestling, and he let Sherk know it. As the fight went on, he knew that he could win the fight by sprawling and brawling, but Sherk didn’t even make him work that hard.
