It has become easier and easier to find quality MMA on TV in the past year. We have WEC on Versus, Fight Night shows on Spike, and a good variety of events on HDNets. But, the cream of the crop still only fight on PPV events be it GSP, Chuck, and BJ in the UFC or now Fedor with Affliction. So - it costs a few dimes to pick up these PPV events at home. Luckily, more and more bars and restaurants in the Tri-State are featuring MMA events, albeit with a cover charge. In the coming months TSF will spotlight establishments that host MMA parties or just allow individual fans the chance to watch the shows at a fraction of the full price.
Our first restaurant/bar that does a great job putting up the fights is The Playwright in the heart of mid-town. This locale may not appear the obvious “jock” type bar - but that very reason is why it is a special place for watching MMA. It usually is catering to the theater crowd. Go to the third floor bar and you will find 4 huge flat screens with the sound up full so you can hear every word. Here are the stats.
Location: The Playwright - 49th St. btw Broadway and 7th.
202 W 49th St, New York, NY 10019
Style: Three floor restaurant with bars on the first and third floors carrying MMA PPV events. Best location is the 3rd floor bar.
Crowd: Slightly upscale but usually very knowlgeble MMA fans. This is not a mob scene which is nice. You should be able to find a seat at the bar or booth table.
Cover Charge: $20
